They say “a mind once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions”.
After my initial exposure to Buteyko in 1997 (whilst I was in Melbourne training to teach Oki-Do yoga) my mind was stretched (and challenged). I listened to a talk by Paul O’Conell which resonated deeply within me and I immediately recognised how I and many others misunderstood so much about breathing. You can imagine this would be quite challenging and confronting to someone studying to teach yoga.
Nevertheless the truth was undeniable and it was now incumbent upon me to gain a deeper understanding and subsequently share and teach that which I had learned. I trained with Paul and the following year returned to Byron Bay determined to spread the word and rectify the breathing of as many local sufferers as possible.
I started back in Byron with a passion and started to establish a local reputation sharing the method with a diverse range of people, getting exposure to a myriad of conditions and symptoms. Improvements in health came so fast and so dramatically for some of my clients (many were able to ditch previously enslaving medication) and this reinforced and validated all my previous training and practical experience that I had with Paul.
Then ………………………………….. I fell in love, got married, brought 2 lovely boys into the world, travelled to Europe and back at least 4 times to support my husband’s business and occasionally managed to keep my hand in with Buteyko, teaching individually and occasional small groups whilst travelling.
And now, at last, we are settled back in the Byron Shire with my husband’s European business safely behind us and ……………………………………. The passion for Buteyko still burns as bright as ever, if not even brighter. I love the idea of children learning to breath correctly at an early age. Or should I say ‘not learning to breath incorrectly’ as I suspect that correct breathing is innate in all of us until we somehow or other learn wrong breathing techniques.
Watching my children grow and occasionally helping them to shut their mouths at appropriate times (as well as their little friends, whenever I can get away with itJ) continues to inspire me to want to play my part in creating a world where we all have greater awareness of our total being and how we can be our own best healers, once we remember how to say ‘yes’ to taking personal responsibility in living preventive life styles and daily practices.
I am now running regular Buteyko programmes,as well as teaching Yoga, in the Byron Shire where I continue to live and learn on a daily basis.
